Study Abroad Studentships

For students to study or undertake research at a centre of learning in any country except the UK or USA

Value

Students receive a basic annual maintenance allowance of £23,040.

Duration

Studentships are tenable for between 12 and 24 months.

Before beginning your application, please read the information below or download it as a PDF Guidance for Applicants.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • have been resident in the UK for at least three years at the time of application
  • hold an undergraduate degree (undergraduates are not eligible)
  • hold a degree from a UK institution (this may be either the undergraduate degree or a further degree held by the applicant). Those studying for a UK PhD who do not otherwise hold a degree from a UK institution may apply as long as they meet the other eligibility criteria
  • either be a student at the time of application or have been registered as a student within the last eight years
  • explain why their work requires residence overseas
Fields of study

Applications will be considered in all subject areas except:

  • studies of disease, illness and disabilities in humans and animals
  • research that is intended to inform clinical practice or the development of medical applications

The Trust excludes these areas because substantial funding is available from other sources for applied medical research, and the Trust’s priority is to support investigations of a fundamental nature.

Ineligible candidates

The following are ineligible to apply:

  • those wishing only to improve their foreign language skills
  • final year undergraduates
  • holders of a permanent academic post wishing to take leave of absence
  • someone applying for an Early Career Fellowship in the same year
  • those who have previously held an Early Career Fellowship
What the Trust offers

The Trust offers approximately 25 Study Abroad Studentships each year.

The awards are tenable at a centre of learning anywhere in the world except the UK and the US.

Value of grant

Studentships consist of:

  • maintenance allowance of £23,040 a year
  • return air fare to the country of tenure and a baggage allowance
  • an allowance of £7,000 a year when a student is accompanied by a dependant partner
  • further allowances are paid at the discretion of the Trust, e.g: a contribution towards overseas fees, internal travel costs associated with the course of study or research and fieldwork expenses

Please ensure that your application does not include any ineligible costs.

Duration and timing of grant

Studentships are tenable for between 12 and 24 months.

Studentships must commence between June of the year in which you receive the grant and the following May.

Conditions

Studentships cannot be held at the same time as a stipendiary postdoctoral position or fellowship, or any other major award. However, UK-registered PhD students who are in receipt of a PhD studentship which does not cover the cost of study abroad may hold the Study Abroad Studentship provided that their existing UK studentship is in abeyance during their period overseas.

Please note that Study Abroad Students who use the award for postdoctoral research will be ineligible to apply to the Trust’s Early Career Fellowship scheme at any point. Please think carefully about which of these two schemes best suit your requirements.

Students must provide a short report to the Committee at the end of each year detailing their progress.

How to apply

To make an application, please access the Leverhulme Trust Grants Management System.

When completing the application form, please refer to the Application Help Notes.

Candidates will be invited for interview during April.

Applicants will be informed of the result of their application in the May following their application.

Feedback on applications

Unfortunately, due to the large number of applications for this scheme, it is not possible to provide feedback to individual applicants regarding unsuccessful applications.
