About the Leverhulme Trust
The Leverhulme Trust is one of the largest charitable foundations by annual spend in the world. It was established in 1925 under the terms of the Will of the First Viscount Leverhulme, the Founder of Lever Brothers, the multinational company that is today Unilever. Since 1925, the Trust has provided grants and scholarships for research and education and in the last two decades alone has distributed grants of more than a £1 billion in the sciences, humanities, social sciences, arts and performing arts.
Today, with an endowment of £4 billion, the Trust is one of the largest all-subject providers of research funding in the UK. It disperses approximately £100 million a year through 14 grant-making schemes, with a focus on funding outstanding scholarships in discovery-led research. Often “higher risk” and multi-disciplinary, the Trust’s support enables talented individuals to realise their personal vision and professional training.
The Director of Finance is responsible for all financial, legal and administrative matters pertaining to the Leverhulme Trust. They also act as Secretary for the Leverhulme Trade Charities Trust. This is an exciting and important time at which to join the Leverhulme Trust. With Professor Anna Vignoles’ commencement as Director of the Trust in 2021 and the launch of a number of new initiatives, the Trust is seeking a new Director of Finance to take up the reins from a long-standing and successful incumbent.
This highly prestigious role calls for an experienced finance professional, who is committed to the aims and values of the Trust. In order to be successful in post, the Director of Finance will need to be prepared to work at a strategic level in collaboration with senior stakeholders from the worlds of academic research and international business, as well as tackling detailed and tactical tasks that enable the Trust’s smooth day-to-day running. The Director of Finance also requires a solid understanding of the Charity Commission in order to keep the Trust abreast of, and compliant with, the regulatory landscape. In due course, it may be that the incoming Director of Finance has the opportunity to take up responsibility for the investment portfolio. Therefore, we welcome applicants who have interest in the Director of Finance role in its current configuration as well as those who in the long term may wish to take on additional responsibility for investment.
This role will suit someone who thrives on working closely as part of a small team that supports high-impact, world-class academic research, and who at the same time has the expertise to guide the Trust authoritatively in discharging its financial and legal duties.
